Dads rules for dating his daughter
They are a welcome departure from the shotgun-slinging threats shrouded in toxic masculinity that are typical of these kinds of fatherly lists.
That’s because men are seen to have rights to their own sexuality, unlike women. Jeff also recently wrote a post about the kind of feminist father he is, explaining that his job is to support his daughters in whatever they do.
There are the photos of dads holding guns, the open letters advising boys of all the rules, and dads wearing ‘funny’ slogan T-shirts banning their daughters’ from having sex while posing with their daughters’ terrified prom dates. It’s possessive, patriarchal, and, let’s admit it, a little creepy. This isn’t the first time Jeff has celebrated women’s rights to their own dating lives and sexualities.
They play into the idea that women need their dad’s permission to date or be sexual – that daughters ‘belong’ to their dads, and that their dads should have control over their offspring’s dating habits. ‘You will respect them, and if you don’t, I promise they won’t need my help putting you back in your place. You know, because it’s really up to women who they date – not their dads.
